Some comments on - and analysis of - the diet program
- NO - This is NOT a permanent diet recommendation! Just like you wouldn't die if you only lived on potato chips for 7 days (it'd be awful though!), your body doesn't starve of nutrients due to this diet. You are only doing some basic housecleaning here!
- Some comments/experiences from visitors can be found on this GM Diets Poll page.
The most important element of the program is the 10 (ten) tall glasses of water a day. You can also flavour the water will some lemon to make the drink easier. While on the program, take only black coffee and never more than one teaspoon of oil. Preferably do not use oil because the high calorific content. No fruit juices before day seven.
Here is what happens to you body while you are on this program and how and why it works.
Day 1:You are preparing your system for the upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh fruits. Fruits are nature's perfect food. They provide everything you can possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.
Day 2:Starts with a fix complex carbohydrates in the form of a boiled potato. This is taken in the form of a boiled potato and taken in the morning to provide energy and balance. The rest of the day too consists of vegetables which are virtually calories free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.
Day 3: Eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from fruits. Your system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will have cravings, which should start to diminish by day four.
Day 4: Bananas and milk. You are in for a surprise. You probably will not be able to eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed during the last three days. You will notice a definite loss of desire for sweets and you will be surprised at how easy this day will go.
Day 5: Rice and tomatoes. The rice is for the carbohydrates and the tomatoes are for the digestion and the fibre. Drinking a lot of water purifies your system. You should notice colourless urine today. If you do not feel like having one cup rice, you may eat less. But you may eat six tomatoes.
Day 6: It is similar to day five. Vitamins and fibre from the vegetables and carbohydrates from the rice. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today compared to day one.
Day 7: You may celebrate with champagne. You may also have white wine instead of champagne, but in all practical programs, and in all surveys done to measure the success of the program, General Motors employees have always preferred champagne to white wine.
More than one cup of coffee with milk is especially forbidden. Milk and oil add empty calories to your diet. Avid coffee lovers can console themselves with black coffee. However, after the first week, it will help your digestion and set your stomach. The key thing to remember is that if you are hungry at any time, then you are not following the diet correctly. Almost all people give up the diet when they are hungry because of dieting. The secret of this program is that you should never hungry. If it is a vegetable day, eat so much vegetables that you are never hungry. If it is a fruits day, eat so much fruits that you are never hungry. You may be bored of eating vegetables all day, but you should not be hungry. You can take any amount of General Motors wonder soup on any day.
- Is this diet bad for my health? Since this diet is structured in such a way that my body starves and does not provide my daily recommended share of nutrients!
Although this diet is not just for the overweight and unhealthy, it is certainly not for the underweight and starved! That said, please understand that our body is a wonderful entity which has enough reserves for sustaining itself for long periods. This diet is not about starving (note that it explicitly mentions that some foods in the menu can be had as much as you wish - the soup!) - but about cleansing your body.
To provide a simple analogy - consider any kind of filter. Your car's, or the water purifier's. If the filter is clogged, the system's efficiency goes down. Under such circumstances, the same amount of effort produces lesser than ideal filtering effect. Our body accumulates toxic materials over time, which means that the nutrients that we intake get polluted. The end effect is not the desired one. And these toxics cause organs to malfunction. Small malfunctions add up to reduce our quality of life - without any apparently big disease. Slowly, larger malfunctions manifest in the form of diseases.
Seven days of body cleansing prepares your body for functioning better again. Don't we all service our equipments? We need to do something similar for our body.
If you suffer from some disease/disorder, then indeed you are advised not to follow this diet regime blindly.
But otherwise, you definitely do not starve your body when you follow this diet. Our body has enough reserves!

Substitute for rice?
Hi anonymous.
First of all, can you share your experiences with this diet here? More independent reports help in either debunking or establishing the credibility of such diets!
Rice itself is a substitute for beef in this vegetarian variant. It is included in the diet for its carbohydrates. Replacing that with wheat would be improper. You can reduce your intake of rice if you so wish, and have as much of the wonder soup and water as you wish. Incidentally, on day five, you might notice very reduced cravings for food! If I may ask, why do you want to replace rice with anything else?
Best wishes!

Hi,
Should we eat the rice alone without anything? Just plain rice?? Or can we add anything to it?

hi root
can u plz tell me that what is main reason to avoid the salt in this diet.is it sodium ? or something else.plz reply

Re: salt
Salt as such isn't bad in itself. It's the quantity that matters. Too much sodium can cause more water intake and retention (since it controls thirst), and lead to higher blood pressure and other related problems. Plus, since you have more sodium in the body, this imbalance can cause other side complex side effects (which would be hard to explain in short here - plus, I am not a medical expert!). That's why, it is suggested that you consume other types of salt (black salt, for example) so that you intake other important minerals while still satisfying your urge for salt in food.
Best wishes!

well, the last time i was on this diet, i cooked plain rice, then in a pan i added little oil , salt, halder(yellow spice)and diced green chillies and then added the cooked rice to it, tastes pretty good, that is if u like spicy food. I just could not eat plain rice. I followed the diet for 5 days and lost 5 pounds, which is pretty good cause i did not exercis.

I lost 10 to 12 pounds in the last pounds by following this diet 3 times with a week interval, although I was not following this diet very strictly. For example, since we can only have black coffee, I was adding two tea spoons of half-n-half every time I drink coffee which was 3 to 4 times a day. On the Rice and Tomatoes day, I prepared tomato curry with just 1 teaspoon oil and all spices and ate rice with tomato curry. It was very good.
Tomato curry preparation: in one tea spoon of oil, add mustard, jeera, onion (1 or 2), and green chillies, and fry until brown. Then add 6 cut tomatoes and cook well, finally add red chilli powder, salt, coriander, dhania powder, garam masala. Take it off from stove after 2 to 5 minutes.

Hi.
Congrats, and thanks very much for sharing your experience. Nice to know that you managed to make your diet comfortable and tasty with a bit of a compromise, and still managed to get good results! Should be really encouraging for people who find it hard to follow the diet strictly for 7 days.

In what form we can have the rice?
The day we have to eat rice and tomatoes which is Day 5.. what we can do is:
cut the 6 tomatoes in small pieces,
put it in the pan,
no oil no water,
a pinch of salt and chilly powder as desired,
cook for a while...
eat it with rice... it tasted delicious... no requirement of oil whatsoever..
I'm in Day 5 and I'm feeling really good... Even if don't lose weight, i know i am following a healthy diet.. And i'm sure i'm gonna stick to this diet plan..

Substitue for beef
Hi,
I am on Day 5 and my question is can i substitute beef with grilled chicken? I have added salt and pepper to my veggies on Day 2 and Day 3. Could that be the reason only 2 lbs weight loss until now? That demotivates me, can you help me get more motivated. Other than that i completely stuck to the diet. I am hoping this high protien and fibre diet the next 3 days will help with more weight loss. I started at 176 lbs and am now 174 lbs.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I'd point you to some
I'd point you to some commentary on the diet - GM Diet Comments - it says that it's OK to have black coffee. It's quiet on the tea front, but I'd assume black tea is fine too. More than one cup of coffee (and tea) is discouraged.
As far as I can understand, any other additions should be avoided.

Asthma and Bananas...
Hi,
I wouldn't suggest following this diet blindly without expert advice if you suffer from any condition, asthma included. But your mother may try to follow a relaxed GM diet by following a majority of the plan as is, and accompanied by light meals as on any other normal day!
For example, eating lots of fruits, vegetables, and the wonder soup (along with plenty of water) will be very useful/beneficial even in normal times.
Best wishes.

bananas
The reason for the bananas is that they are high in potasium. This balances the sodium levels in your body and helps to process certain nutrients. Potatoes are also high in potasium, so if you are to substitute anything for bananas, that would be your best bet.

Hi. The Wonder Soup can be had as many times as you wish on all days of the diet! Do take a look at the recipe at the bottom of the diet details page.
You should not take any fruit juices.

Re: strenous exercise
Hi,
I'd advise you to refrain from heavy exercises. Since your glucose intake is low, and heavy exercises need a lot of it, the end effect might not be particularly pleasant!
I'd suggest normal routine activities, and mild walking - but nothing more than that.
Best wishes.

It might be worthwhile to try this variation (pulses instead of rice) - surely, it won't hurt! Maybe, the next time I follow this diet, I'll use pulses instead of rice. Others are welcome to try this variation and report!

Re: Butter milk
I'm not a dietician - so, I can only suggest based on some shallow knowledge and some gut feeling. Having butter-milk instead of milk should be okay, but ensure some gap between the butter-milk and fruits which need to be taken on the same day.
