GM Diet - Commentary
Some comments on - and analysis of - the diet program
- NO - This is NOT a permanent diet recommendation! Just like you wouldn't die if you only lived on potato chips for 7 days (it'd be awful though!), your body doesn't starve of nutrients due to this diet. You are only doing some basic housecleaning here!
- Some comments/experiences from visitors can be found on this GM Diets Poll page.
The most important element of the program is the 10 (ten) tall glasses of water a day. You can also flavour the water will some lemon to make the drink easier. While on the program, take only black coffee and never more than one teaspoon of oil. Preferably do not use oil because the high calorific content. No fruit juices before day seven.
Here is what happens to you body while you are on this program and how and why it works.
Day 1:You are preparing your system for the upcoming program. Your only source of nutrition is fresh fruits. Fruits are nature's perfect food. They provide everything you can possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.
Day 2:Starts with a fix complex carbohydrates in the form of a boiled potato. This is taken in the form of a boiled potato and taken in the morning to provide energy and balance. The rest of the day too consists of vegetables which are virtually calories free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.
Day 3: Eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from fruits. Your system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will have cravings, which should start to diminish by day four.
Day 4: Bananas and milk. You are in for a surprise. You probably will not be able to eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed during the last three days. You will notice a definite loss of desire for sweets and you will be surprised at how easy this day will go.
Day 5: Rice and tomatoes. The rice is for the carbohydrates and the tomatoes are for the digestion and the fibre. Drinking a lot of water purifies your system. You should notice colourless urine today. If you do not feel like having one cup rice, you may eat less. But you may eat six tomatoes.
Day 6: It is similar to day five. Vitamins and fibre from the vegetables and carbohydrates from the rice. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today compared to day one.
Day 7: You may celebrate with champagne. You may also have white wine instead of champagne, but in all practical programs, and in all surveys done to measure the success of the program, General Motors employees have always preferred champagne to white wine.
More than one cup of coffee with milk is especially forbidden. Milk and oil add empty calories to your diet. Avid coffee lovers can console themselves with black coffee. However, after the first week, it will help your digestion and set your stomach. The key thing to remember is that if you are hungry at any time, then you are not following the diet correctly. Almost all people give up the diet when they are hungry because of dieting. The secret of this program is that you should never hungry. If it is a vegetable day, eat so much vegetables that you are never hungry. If it is a fruits day, eat so much fruits that you are never hungry. You may be bored of eating vegetables all day, but you should not be hungry. You can take any amount of General Motors wonder soup on any day.
- Is this diet bad for my health? Since this diet is structured in such a way that my body starves and does not provide my daily recommended share of nutrients!
Although this diet is not just for the overweight and unhealthy, it is certainly not for the underweight and starved! That said, please understand that our body is a wonderful entity which has enough reserves for sustaining itself for long periods. This diet is not about starving (note that it explicitly mentions that some foods in the menu can be had as much as you wish - the soup!) - but about cleansing your body.
To provide a simple analogy - consider any kind of filter. Your car's, or the water purifier's. If the filter is clogged, the system's efficiency goes down. Under such circumstances, the same amount of effort produces lesser than ideal filtering effect. Our body accumulates toxic materials over time, which means that the nutrients that we intake get polluted. The end effect is not the desired one. And these toxics cause organs to malfunction. Small malfunctions add up to reduce our quality of life - without any apparently big disease. Slowly, larger malfunctions manifest in the form of diseases.
Seven days of body cleansing prepares your body for functioning better again. Don't we all service our equipments? We need to do something similar for our body.
If you suffer from some disease/disorder, then indeed you are advised not to follow this diet regime blindly.
But otherwise, you definitely do not starve your body when you follow this diet. Our body has enough reserves!
In the commentary, it says "Vegetables as may be taken in the form of a salad if desired. No dressing except malt, white or wine vinegar, squeezed lemon, garlic, herbs. No more than one tea spoon of oil. "......so, question is, can salt be taken?
Salt allowed.
Avoid sugar.. a bit of chilli powder can be added for cooking.
Best snack would be steamed corn with lime salt and chilli flakes.. Try mashed grean peas and dry fried Brinjal (add salt) for lunch.
Hey chaps...
I tried GM diet once.. but didn't complete it that time. It is really hard to accomplish especially when you are living with your friends.. Loads of temptations.
Somehow tried till 4th day. same day evening checked my weight .. you know what.. I reduced 4 KG... he he... that was enough for me.. went straight to KFC.. had a full bucket as if I was starving for 2 weeks..
Now back again with a stronger mind... advantage now is I'm staying alone.. so all I would have will be what I shoppe this weekend.
Starting this again on coming Monday (16th Aug).. anyone like to join me??
Jason..
Hi jason,
Have you already started or would you like to postpone by a week and start together on the 23rd?
Ruhi
Sorry I don't think I can start it again next Monday.
Got a B'day party on 19th and as well Onam coming on 23rd. So will start it after those feasts...
Will let you all know on the progress.
Guys.. DIET's first three letters say 'DIE', one shouldn't starve their body otherwise you mess up greatly with your metabolism
DIE's first 2 letters say 'DI' - that's why Diana (Di) died. Nice logic :)
I read all the comments, the diet plan, got adviced by a teacher of mine regarding this diet and YES! i am going to start this now!!!
I am excited and willing "Go Clean!" system.
Will definitely write after good weight loss.
Thanks.
I was looking this up and I found a few variations of the program mainly on day 5 and 6. Certain programs calls for "Day Five Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.
Day Six Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content. "

Any added weight loss with one verses the other??
Hi there ,
I am planning to start my Veggie Vesion tomorow ie 12th June 10. Really tensed as just to survive on fruits , its really terrifying ! Anyways after reading from you guys feel motivated ....Will update on my progress soon .
Looks like we both started on same day... I did this diet previously and lost 10# each time I did. After that , stabilizing weight with constant less intake of carbos is more important I believe.
cool beans.... easy to survive. Its just a week right.
Hello..
Although I didn't really start taking up this challenge on 05/06/2010 (as usual those unforseen circumstances of meeting people and munching here and there without resisting weekend restaurant's food which is filled with nice aroma of rich indian spices!!), I started my real challenge from Monday-May-10. Pheww..what a day it was! It was a rough ride. Although the term is too sophisticated, it wasn't that bad. The first half of the day was easy with small cup of plain oatmeal (no sugar here) as my breakfast, 4 slices of pineapples-4 strawberries and 4 slices of cantaloup for my lunch which I broke down into 2 small meals that lasted until 3:30PM. IAll was good until I got back home after work at around 7 PM. Once I entered my kitchen, I started drooling at the bag of pita chips and the humus dip. But I really resisted and by passed my temptations with a small mexican mango! Felt guuudd..Turned on my T.V. to kill my time (I usually go over some books in the evenings but you know reading increases hunger, so didn't wanna go that route at all). In 30 mins was hungry man again..I went to my refrigerator and knew there was a healthy water melon waiting for me to bling a smile. So without wasting no more time, cut it and savoured the fresh melon. Had about 4 slices and stopped as my hunger died down. After 1 hour, my stomach started growling once again and quenched the fiery with few more pieces of melons. On a whole, finished about half of the medium melon.
Today is my second day and feeling good about yesterday's achievement. Had 2 small potatoes (remember without any salt/pepper) for breakfast and here I am at work typing my journey so far. Would share more as I go forward. Feeling better now... What about you guys?

Yesterday was definitely a little rough...the lack of caffeine gave me a horrible migraine, but this morning (day 2) I felt pretty good. I remembered to grab a cup of coffee (black of course)on the way to work so I wouldn't get another migraine ;) I really like the soup, and i love sauteed and cooked veggies, so I see this day going much easier than yesterday now that my body is adjusting. I did lose about 4 pounds between yesterday morning and this morning, and that DEFINITELY helps keep me motivated..lol Keep up the good work Naveen, I'm right there with ya!!

That's really awesome, Naveen! And the way you write, made the reading interesting too. In fact, my mouth was watering at the end of it! :)
How is it going now? I've generally seen people feel very down by the third day. But if you manage to get past the third day, the fourth day is a breeze! You can easily ignore all temptations, and you eat only what and how much you need.
Best wishes!
Hello,
Starting GM Veggie Diet today on April 18th 2010... Anyone else on the sanme boat?

Starting from today...26/4/10...not in the same boat but behind you.
Hello,
Today is my Day 1 any one else starting today?
Beef is replaced by 1 cup of rice...1cup uncooked rice?????
I read some where it should be replaced by lentils I am now confused.. any suggestions
How can you eat uncooked rice at all..Lentils are better than rice but I think you should follow the GM diet without any modifications or substitutions. So go for the COOKED rice!

I just completed it today and lost 4 kgs
I did not strictly followed it but i took care to drink lot of water... more than 10 -12 glasses each day.
I ate extra rice, instead of 1 bowl, I ate nearly 2 bowl (feast,,,,,,)
On third day, it was getting difficult to continue as i was loosing controlll but i resisted and from forth day on... i did not feel any discomfort...
today ,,i was 4 kg less.....
not bad at all....I am feeling lighter and I think i can continue similar diet for a week next month also....
hi, I also started on monday. Today is day3 for me. Till now I have followed strictly. Day 1 I had headaches, day2 was ok. Day3 -Feeling very sleepy today.
Manju
that's good to hear.i also started on monday.if possible we both can share our feeling s about this.
i stay in u.s.i'm also following strictly. bu ti'm having dates for fruits.do u feel is that ok having dates for fruit?
sujatha
dates aren't fresh fruit and are very high in sugar and energy so although they are healthy, you should stick to fresh fruit as the diet specifies!
did anybody prepare the soup.If prepared, can we add salt and pepper.can anybody tell details how to do the soup ?do we have to just mix all the contents and boil it.that's it.
suajtha
Hi,
You can simply boil the vegetables and mash and filter. Add salt and pepper to taste. Ensure that the quantity of salt is as little as you can manage.
Best wishes.
HI,
This is a wonderful diet proram, and this is the third time i am following it. In the earlier times, i lost 6 kgs and 8 kgs. This time, i am in my 5th day today, and i have already lost 4 kgs. What i have learnt is that, if this diet is followed strictly, then you have got a better chance of losing more weight. But, it doesnt do any harm to have some innovations in the diet, becuase, ultimately, we will have great results, if we complete the 7 days, with some compromose as well.
All the very best for the folks who intend to take up this diet in the near future.
hi congrats on ur loss.
i am doing gm 3 rd day.how much did u exercise during gm?
after gm what diet u followed to keep off the weight

Can we workout when we are following this GM diet? In vegetabkes could you recommend which ones are better?
i see no meat being eaten in this diet anywhere but i read the comments and many say eating beef, chicken, or even lentils??? i'm on day 3 today i soon would like to know when i'm supposed to have any of these or should i not need to worry about it.
Meet is being replaced by rice in the vegetarian variant of this diet.
is it ok to drink soymilk instead of cow's milk and eat oatmeal everyday for breakfast? I can't seem to start my day without oatmeal.
I am not a milk drinker---- what can I substitute for milk?
